Along the Ouémé River, the land, which is regularly flooded, is logically invaded by a luxuriant vegetation. Higher up, the landscape around Bonou is dominated by oil palm cultivation. Here, we are in the heart of Yoruba country with its kingdoms, and with its oro or guélédé societies that have become famous for their masks. From Porto-Novo and National Road 3, a series of tracks lead to the banks of the Ouémé. The commune of Bonou (with a population of about 50,000 inhabitants) is then visible. Note that part of the village of Bonou is located on an island, so ask a piroguier to take you there.
