The majestic 2,891-metre Mount Marapi, which dominates the region 6 km from the town, can be climbed without too much difficulty. Nicknamed the "Mountain of Fire", it is one of the 127 most active volcanoes in Indonesia, attracting many hikers. In Bukittinggi, guides offer night hikes. But beware: from time to time, the volcano emits toxic fumes, and careless tourists have been asphyxiated. In 1992, an eruption claimed many victims, and in 1989, lava engulfed no less than three villages. On December 3, 2023, the volcano erupted for the second time in just over a month, expelling a 3 km cloud of ash into the air. This caused the death of 23 hikers surprised by the ash rain. After the initial eruption, 52 people were rescued, eight of whom were hospitalized with burns. The ascent begins at Kota Baru (report to the police station, where you will be told the best route or denied access). To get there, take a bus from the Aur Kuning terminal in Bukittinggi (from 5am). The climb takes 5 hours, and it's advisable to leave early: condensation from the heat covers the summit fairly quickly (usually by 11am). Please note: Indonesians love to climb to the summit on Saturday evenings; just join them the day before, in Kota Baru, to watch the sunrise.
