The Buddhist temple of Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991, is considered one of the most impressive in Asia, alongside Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Bagan in Burma. It lies 42 km north-west of Yogyakarta (1h drive). The village next to the temple is home to a few hotels and warungs, as well as a bus station for the innumerable coaches and buses. Two other small temples nearby (1.5 km) can also be visited: Candi Mendut and Pawon. The surrounding area is superb, with rice paddies and coconut palms stretching as far as the eye can see to the foot of the volcanoes.
