Situated 65 km northeast of Yogya, along the Bengawan Solo river, in the middle of a large fertile valley, Surakarta (population 600,000), often called Solo after the original village on whose site it was founded, is for the Javanese the true cultural and historical capital of their island. Those in the know say it's just as lively as Yogya, and even more interesting. But when Indonesia was in turmoil at the end of the 20th century, riots severely damaged the city.It can be visited on a day trip from Yogyakarta. Today, Solo has retained much of its charm and boasts a number of cultural attractions. A center of Javanese culture (literature, dance, music and theater) and a religious center, its great poets are still remembered by the Javanese people. Its factories create some of the finest batiks on the island, but it's above all on the performing arts scene that Solo is a must: theater, dance, music... this is the city of excellence. You'll feel the gentle Javanese way of life here.
