The place is quite picturesque. The village of Imogiri ("snow mountain" in Sanskrit) is made up of old mud-brick houses. The mausoleum comprises 3 distinct sections: the central courtyard, where Sultan Agung and his successors are laid to rest; the princes of Solo on the left; and the sultans of Yogya on the right. To reach the mausoleum, you have to climb the 345 steps of the monumental staircase under the shade of trees overlooking the alley which leads to a circular path gradually reaching the top of the hill. Visitors are only allowed to enter the princes' tombs in the more restricted courtyards, provided they are wearing special Javanese court dress. The Imogiri tombs were installed on a hilltop by Sultan Agung in 1645. All his successors were buried here. This royal cemetery is now a sacred site. From here, you have a view over the southern plain of Yogya. The panorama of the volcanic chain and Gunung Merapi is exceptional.
