Mayong is located in the Jepara district on Java's north coast, overlooking the Java Sea. It is the home of Raden Ajeng Kartini (1879-1904). Daughter of the regent of Jepara, she was allowed, thanks to her father's position, to attend Dutch schools. She received a progressive education that enabled her not only to campaign against polygamy, but also to criticize Dutch colonialist behavior. She did much to ensure that young girls could go to school. She married the regent of Rembang and, with her husband's help, opened a school for girls. She died at the age of 25, in 1904, and her writings were published shortly afterwards. This publication made her Indonesia's very first "modern" woman, the spearhead and undisputed figure of what might be called Javanese feminism. A monument has been dedicated to her in Mayong, in the Pelemkerep district, on the spot where the placenta from her birth was supposedly buried, as Javanese tradition once demanded! Today, it is a popular place to visit, as it is said that the energy of the place can cure disabilities and that miracles have already happened there... To pay tribute to this national heroine, April 21 has been declared Kartini Day in Indonesia.
