Fanø belongs to the archipelago of the Friesland Islands, coastal islands separated from the mainland by the Wadden Sea. Its area is about 56 km2 (16 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide). There is no bridge connecting the island with the mainland, you have to take a small ferry that makes the crossing in 20 minutes (departure every half hour in summer, every hour the rest of the year). Migratory birds are sheltered in its meadows. The island is known for its sandy beaches, its thatched houses, all oriented on an east-west axis, its windmills and its kite festival which takes place every year in June.
