Situated on the island of Lolland (a flat island facing the German port of Puttgarden), a pretty, peaceful little town on the edge of a lake where ducks splash about, built around an abbey of the Order of Saint Brigid, a Catholic order founded by Brigid of Sweden (1303-1373). All that remains of this monastic complex, founded in 1416, is the imposing church, now a Lutheran cathedral. The effigy of the saint on the town's coat of arms is a reminder of Maribo's origins. A discreet destination, with a very mild climate, and much less popular than others. So why not make the most of it?
