This town of 18,000 inhabitants, whose name means "German market", is interesting for the ruins of its 14th-century fortress, the best preserved in the region. Built by Petru Muşat on a plateau overlooking the surrounding area, it offers superb panoramic views. Still imposing with its thick stone walls, it nevertheless suffered numerous attacks (Hungarian, Turkish or Polish), which brought it down in 1691. Its bastions were named after the trade guilds that financed its enlargement in the 17th century. It fell into ruin from the 18th century onwards, but was renovated between 1968 and 1972, and again between 2002 and 2006. Access is via an attractive wooden bridge. A museum is housed inside. It features reconstructed rooms (council chamber, secret room, ladies' room, kitchen, prison, etc.), populated by typical medieval characters (boyars, etc.).
