Daegu is Korea's fourth-largest city, with a population of 2.5 million. Nestled in the heart of a basin surrounded by mountains, the city is not known for its mild climate: winters are harsh and summers oppressive. Despite its imposing stature, Daegu doesn't particularly stand out for its tourist attractions, monuments or even cultural events, with the notable exception of its Herbal Festival. However, it is an interesting starting point for exploring the region, in particular the Haeinsa temple on the border of North and South Gyeongsang. By way of comparison, Gwangju or Busan, not far away and offering much more from a cultural and recreational point of view, are preferable to this somewhat bland city.
