Korea's first national park, Jirisan encompasses three provinces: Jeollanamdo, Jeollabukdo and Gyeongsangnamdo. Its peak, Cheonwangbong Peak (1915 m), is the highest in the country after Hallasan Peak on Jeju Island. Jirisan is one of the most important mountains in the eyes of the Koreans, who regard it as sacred. It is said to be able to turn fools into wise people. While this assertion is difficult to verify, one thing is certain: its flora and fauna are immensely rich. During the hours of hiking this park offers, you can enjoy the majesty of the landscapes, but also discover the temples and their national treasures located here and there. Whether you're a keen sportsman or a novice, you can take 1 of the 18 marked hiking trails. There's something for every physical condition.Access is easiest from Jeollanam-do province, particularly from the city of Suncheon. From Jeollabuk-do, you can easily reach Namwon, and in Gyeongsangnam-do, Jinju and Hadong are the two nearest towns.
