Gyeongju is THE historical Korean city par excellence. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Silla (from 52 BC to 935 AD) and its cultural heritage is unprecedented. Aptly described as a "museum without walls", Gyeongju is full of historical sites, each one more breathtaking than the next. Among the must-sees are the splendid Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Cave, treasures of Buddhism. It also denotes other Korean cities by its architecture. Indeed, under the dictator Park Chunghee, the obligation was given to respect the traditional architecture for all buildings. This makes it quite charming.
