MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA (MAC)
Read moreThe Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the University of São Paulo (USP) celebrated its 50 years in 2013. Its history began with the transfer to the USP of the collections of the old museum of modern art in São Paulo. Today the MAC operates on three sites in town, including this one in L, where the public can enjoy high-quality temporary exhibitions throughout the year. In total, he has a fund of 10 000 works: oils, drawings, etchings, sculptures, objects and conceptual works… The biggest names here are Michelangelo Amedeo or Paul Klee, the Fauves Matisse and Dufy, the Picasso Picasso and Braque, the Abstractionnistes, Léger, Picabia, Alexander Calder, the surrealist Chagall, Ernst, Miro… This is for the foreign canvases, reminiscent of the collection of our Beaubourg museum in Paris.
We will also delight in the Brazilian component of the museum, dedicated to modernist artists, for the most part, such as Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Lasar Segall, Di Cavalcanti, Victor Brecheret, Vicente do Rego Monteiro and John Graz, all exhibitors of the Modern Art Week, which mark its time in 1922. The avant-garde of the 1930 ' s is not in rest, the collection counts many works of Carvalho de Carvalho, Aldo Bonadei, Francisco Rebolo… Noted the social theme developed by Innichen Portinari and Clóvis Graciano and the graphic arts addressed by Edith Behring and Renina Katz.
Finally, the collection of contemporary art is logically the most extensive. One can cite the great international masters who are exposed here, such as the post-modern surrealist Antonio Tàpies, and the great names of optical art such as Vasarely, or the pop art of Claes Oldenburg and Robert Rauschenberg.
From the 1960 s, the Biennale of art in São Paulo changed trends, and the wave of abstract expressionism and neo-concrete art developed in Brazil, reflecting the works of Lygia Clark, Iberê Camargo, Maria Leontina, Yolanda Mohalyi, Tomie Ohtake and Arcângelo Ianelli, the most Emblematic.
Finally more conceptual, the "combinations" of Nelson Remaking, Geraldo de Barros, Artur Barrio, Antônio Dias, José Roberto Aguilar, Cláudio Tozzi, Wesley Duke Lee, or Cildo Meireles are interesting. The conceptual art involving installations, performances and videos includes its Brazilian representatives, such as Mario Cravo Neto, Iole de Freitas or Julio Plaza.
