It is in Donaueschingen that the Danube has its source, at the foot of the castle. Located halfway between Freiburg and the famous Lake Constance, this city is famous for the source formed by the confluence of the Brigach and the Breg, and which gives a little further east the fabulous Danube. The city was the residence of the Princes of Fürstenberg from 1723 to 1806. The Princes' castle is the symbol of this heritage: the Danubius fountain in the center of the monument marks the exact spot where the Danube originates. The Donaueschingen Chamber Music Festival is one of the oldest and most important festivals of its kind in Europe.
