To the south-east of Hanover, this town of 104,000 inhabitants doesn't look like much at first glance. The war destroyed 90% of Hildesheim's old town, but some of its substance rose from the ashes after the war, rebuilt as it was. This includes the Market Square and, above all, its major monuments, which are listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites: the Dom (cathedral) and Michaeliskirche (church), Romanesque buildings from the Ottonian period (11th century). The Roemer- und Pelizaeus Museum, with its Egyptian, pre-Columbian and Chinese collections, is well worth a visit.
