It is located south of the huge Lübeburger Heide moorland forest. This city of 71,000 inhabitants was the seat of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.Its historic centre is remarkably well preserved, characterised by its white half-timbered houses typical of the region. Founded in 1292, the ducal castle was the residence of the Guelph house until 1705. It houses the oldest theatre in Germany, dating from 1674. Starting from Hanover, this very pretty little town is an excellent daytime exploration destination. It can be reached in 30 minutes by train
