Protestant church built between 1010 and 1033, featuring a superb wooden ceiling and a powerful Romanesque silhouette.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the imposing Michaeliskirche dominates the city with its powerful Romanesque silhouette. Built between 1010 and 1033 by Bishop Bernward, the church became Protestant with the Reformation in 1542. The painted wooden ceiling from the early 13th century is absolutely superb: one of the masterpieces of late German Romanesque painting. Dismantled in 1943, it was fortunately preserved from destruction.
