This large city (245,000 inhabitants), east of Hanover and close to the Volkswagen city of Wolfsburg (to be visited if you are interested in cars), has long been the historical heart of the vast duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, which remained an independent duchy until 1871. It was the most important city in the region until the rapid development of Hanover in the 17th century. In 1939, Braunschweig (Brunswick in French) was the largest half-timbered city in Germany... But Brunswick turned to modernism after its 90% destruction during the Second World War; even historic buildings that remained intact were destroyed to make way for futuristic architecture. Since the 1990s alone, the city has been trying to highlight its historic monuments, or even to reconstruct those that have disappeared in the same way. Nevertheless, Braunscheweig has retained its historical character. Some beautiful monuments remain. From Hanover, you can visit them in a half-day or full-day excursion, taking your time, it is worth it.
