About 25 km from Bremen. 50 min by train Bremen Hauptbahnhof. On the half day, a beautiful visit that this "Künstlerkolonie", a colony of artists, founded in 1889 by painters in search of bucolic, peace and light. This is a good opportunity, together with painting, to discover the intriguing brêmoise, humid and marsh countryside.Otto Modersohn, Fritz Mackensen, architect Heinrich Vogeler and a few other artists, later Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto's wife, moved to this small village lost in the middle of the moor (marsh), to form a community that had its hour of glory in the last few years of the th century. Their friend, Rainer Maria Rilke, devoted a book to their colony. The village has religiously preserved this heritage and its environment. The visit of the colony and the exhibitions of these pre-expressionist and expressionist painters is a classic. The village is also worth a look. Many buildings, including the station, are signed Vogeler.
