Cut off from Bremen by 70 km from Lower Saxony, this city of 120,000 inhabitants, whose name means "Bremen port", is nevertheless part of the Land of Bremen and is inseparable from its mother city. An open sea industrial port developed in the 19th century to transport the outlets of the Hanseatic city, it is a working-class city par excellence.
