For those who find the word northern port resonates as a mystery, attraction or curiosity, a trip to Bermerhaven is a must. Cut off from Bremen by 70 km from Lower Saxony, this city of 120,000 inhabitants, whose name means "Bremen port", is nevertheless part of the Land of Bremen and is inseparable from its mother city. An open sea industrial port developed in the 19th century to transport the outlets of the Hanseatic city, it is a working-class city par excellence. While it has suffered full deindustrialisation since the 1970s, the German economic recovery in recent years has given it a new impetus and new hopes, especially as it remains a major element of Bremen's accumulated wealth and maritime trade.Bremerhaven is a huge hub, and you can get lost on the docks to see all kinds of containers being transported and unloaded. About 1.5 million cars pass through Bremerhaven every year. When the port was founded in the 19th century, it was named Wesermünde ("mouth of the Weser"). It was completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War. To start a new life, the authorities chose to rename it "Bremerhaven". Completely destroyed, the city took on a resolutely modern face, and we can see the styles of contemporary architecture from the 1950s to the present day. Far from being a tourist destination, the city allows you to feel the scale of Germany's commercial vocation and offers all the deep atmosphere that a North Sea port can offer. Of course, the North Sea is not the Pacific, but it has its own unique charm. It symbolizes the opening towards the world, the invitation to travel. A stroll on the docks, along the sailboats and the biggest boats, moored in the Havenwelten area, at the foot of the old port, below the ultra-modern buildings, is already a call to the open sea, an invitation to take to the sea. Bremerhaven has beautiful contemporary architectural achievements, such as the large tower that marks the silhouette of its port and high quality museums.
