This small port town of 50,000 inhabitants is the capital of East Friesland. Its industrial activity gradually declined after the Second World War despite the establishment of a Volkswagen factory that employs almost all the city's inhabitants. Largely destroyed during the war, Emden is not without charm, with its port, canals and pedestrian streets. If it is not an attraction in itself, it is a pleasant base for exploring the Frisian islands.
