Once known as Dover Mills and burned during the War of 1812, Port Dover rose from the ashes closer to the lake to become a freshwater fishing mecca. But Port Dover is also a destination for lounging and water sports. The tourist area, though small, is full of surf, craft and clothing shops. The beach, often crowded on hot days, is still quite large and a few palm trees (!) give it a southern feel. For a nice walk at the end of the day, walk along the pier to the lighthouse. Pay attention to the benches which bear the names of all the fishermen who died at sea...
