Located on the shore of Lake Muskoka, the town was built around the Muskoka River Falls, which provided the power for the town's first mill (there are also several waterfalls to see in the area: Wilson's Falls, High Falls, etc.). The first settlements date back to the 1860's, and the village was incorporated in 1875 before being granted municipal status in 1889. Although its location in the region was coveted, limited accessibility slowed its expansion for a long time. Since then, it has benefited from the installation of modern roads ensuring its place of choice in this tourist area.
