Its history dates back to the 17th century, during the Iroquois wars, when the French built a series of forts along the Richelieu River. After the American War of Independence, many Loyalists settled in the region and in this city, once called Dorchester, which was an important trading point with New York and Lake Champlain in the state of Vermont. It was also, in the 19th century, the capital of earthenware and stoneware (Farrar collection). Today, people come here for its cultural vitality, its water sports activities, its cycling and walking tours, not to mention the International Balloon Festival.
