The port was founded in 1857 by fishermen from the Magdalen Islands. In 1948, it was industrialized after the discovery of a deposit of ilmenite, an ore composed of titanium and natural iron oxide. From Havre-Saint-Pierre, you can travel to the Mingan Archipelago, including the famous Hammer Islands, and to Anticosti Island. From Havre-Saint-Pierre to Labrador, fishing villages are next to Innu communities.
