In the early 1900s, it was a vast wilderness with rivers and numerous lakes that were virtually inaccessible. It was a prospector from Nova Scotia, Edmund Horne, who discovered unbelievably rich deposits of copper. People flocked from all over: a mine was set up, wooden cabins appeared on the shores of the lake and there was soon talk of a village. Today, it is the urban heart and regional capital of Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Restaurants, cafés, bars and boutiques line its main streets and its cultural life is particularly flourishing, with many important festivals.
