If the presumed agricultural wealth of the soil led to the construction of the railway and the development of the region, the mining wealth undoubtedly gave it a boost. Gold discoveries followed silver ones, accelerating the growth of Northeastern Ontario. Today, a few mines are still operating in the gold belt. The museum at the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau traces the region's mining history and the history of the North. For a breath of fresh air, check out Esker Lakes Provincial Park, which contains evidence of the last ice age.
