Located about 75 kilometers east of Pictou, the small town of Antigonish (population just under 5,000) is nicknamed The Nish by the locals (short for Antigonish). It is a lively town, especially with the presence of St. Francis Xavier University. For a good meal with local flavors, we recommend Gabrieau's and The Townhouse (we love the latter), and for an aperitif, the Candid Brewing Company microbrewery. Every year in July, the oldest Highland Games competition outside of Scotland is held, The Antigonish Highland Games, an event created in the 1860s. A must see!
