Coyhaique is the capital of the Aysén region and the only important city (almost 60,000 inhabitants). Located at the confluence of Rio Simpson and Rio Coyhaique, the name of the city comes from the Aonikenk people and means "where the lagoons meet". It was built in 1929 with the aim of stimulating colonization. Seat of local industries, it could become a major tourist pole although most activities are within a few hours. It is a pleasant stopover on the Southern Route and a good starting point to the national parks of the region and Lake Carrera. If you can, explore the surrounding area: lakes, reserves, parks, ski resorts, fish-filled rivers, nature is never far away!
