In 1870, under the command of Captain Enrique Simpson, an expedition was launched to better discover the area. It is then that the crew discovers a calm bay, ideal for the accosting of the boats: it is of course Puerto Chacabuco. The small town of barely 1,000 inhabitants was named after the battle of Chacabuco which took place during the Chilean War of Independence. Today, it plays a key role in connecting the region to the rest of Chile: it serves as a stopover for ships coming from Puerto Montt or Quellon. However, since the eruption of the Hudson volcano in 1991, the port has moved to the coast.
