Panguipulli, whose name means "land of lions" (pumas) in Mapudungun, is the centre of the Seven Lakes region. The small town, founded on December 31, 1946, has a population of about 8,000 and stretches along the shore of the lake it is named after. It is nicknamed the "City of Roses" because in 1980, 1,000 rose bushes were planted there; there are more than 14,000 today and they only embellish this small town with its picturesque charm. Originally, the town was a port from which wood from the inner valleys was transported to the central valley via the old railway line. Today, Panguipulli offers good infrastructure, beautiful scenery and many possibilities for excursions.
