Pedro de Valdivia founded the Imperial City here in 1522, on a small hill overlooking the river, which was once navigable to the sea. This city was the first episcopal centre in Chile, but the Mapuche rebellion forced the settlers to abandon the place in 1599. It was not until 1882 that a reconstruction of the city was considered, under its current name, which means in Mapudungun "where there was a place". Here, you are in "Lafkenche" territory, which means "People of the Coast". The Mapuche communities live, on a land surrounded by the sea, rivers and lakes, mainly from the cultivation of potatoes.
