Puerto Saavedra is an important commercial centre on the coast. Saavedra means "the melody of the river when it sings". But a city was built as early as 1887...before it was completely destroyed by the tsunami of 1960. Rebuilt behind the dunes, the city attracts tourists during the summer. The Cerro Mirador offers a panoramic view of the city and further south, 4 km away, the long grey beach of Boca Budi attracts swimmers. It is also an important historical site: in fact, it was the only place authorized by the Mapuches for the Spaniards to transport their goods between the cities of Valdivia and Concepción.
