Discovered in 1931 by English explorer and botanist Frank Smith during his expedition to Mount Kamet, this small valley (87 km 2), at 3 200 m, is a paradise for nature lovers. During July and August, no fewer than 300 species of flowers, some endemic to the valley, come into bloom. The rich diversity of species and their medicinal interest allowed the Flowers Valley to be classified as a national park in 1982. The entrance of the park is located above the village of Ghangaria, which is reached on foot after 14 km of a magnificent ascent from Govind Ghat. The many Sikhs encountered on the road perform a pilgrimage to the sacred lake of Hem Kund, which is 5 km above Ghangaria.
