Gangotri, a village of 110 souls, is of little interest, but it is the starting point for a superb walk to the Gaumukh ("cow's snout") glacier, considered to be the true source of the Ganges. It was here that Ganga poured down to earth after spending several centuries in Shiva's hair. During its first few kilometers, it (the sacred river is a lady) also bears the name Bhagirathi in gratitude to Bhagiratha, who called it to Earth. Close to Tibet, Gangotri is proud to have given spiritual birth to the Ganges, the source of Hinduism. The winding road to get there is spectacular, and the scenery grandiose. Rice terraces are followed by pine forests, and as you climb, the landscape becomes more mineral and wild. When it rains, journey times can be considerably longer. Gangotri is difficult to reach from November to April, due to heavy snowfalls. Residents then migrate to Mukhba, 12 kilometers downriver.
