population: 1,300. elevation 3,580 m. Kedarnath is one of the country's most sacred Hindu sites. According to legend, it was to atone for the exactions committed during the Bhârata war that the Pandavas, the hero-gods of the Mahâbhârata, built the Kedarnath temple. Its construction, not far from the headwaters of the Mandakini river, actually dates back to the 8th century CE. It is dedicated to Shiva (Kedar is one of his many names), who is worshipped here in the form of one of India's twelve jyotirlingas. The sanctuary is reached only after a strenuous but sublime 14 km ascent from the village of Gaurikund. At the foot of a mountain range over 6,000 m high, Kedarnath is the most isolated of the "Char Dham" sites. Access is only possible from early May to late October.
