From the border with the United Arab Emirates, the village of Liwa is just before the village of Sohar. At the southern exit of the town, about 1.5 km after the centre, you come across a masterly fort. Unlike the other castles on the Batinah coast, this one is not built directly on the seafront. It was built about 400 years ago. Before its restoration from 2000 to 2003 by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, only the central tower remained. Today, the citadel has five observation towers, interesting for the breathtaking views they offer over the coastal villages of the surrounding area, including Harmul.
