The Al Buraymi oasis is unique in that it straddles two territories: the United Arab Emirates (Al Ain sector) and the Sultanate of Oman. This strategic location between Sohar and the Gulf, at the confluence of the caravan routes, earned it more than one conflict, as witnessed by the presence of the Al Hillah and Al Khandaq forts, both open to the public. It was occupied very early, probably as early as 1,500 BC, as the nearby burial mounds would suggest. Al Buraymi was also the first city in Oman to be touched by Islam. A frontier town, there's nothing extraordinary about it, apart from its ancient defensive buildings and camel market.
