Former stronghold of an estuary in the mouths of the Meuse, Brielle is full of perfectly preserved historical monuments, such as the Sainte-Catherine church or the town hall, both built in the 15th century in a very particular gothic style. The name of the city comes from the Gallic Broglio which means "enclosure". It is a superb fortified citadel city. It currently has a population of just under 18,000. The city was English in the 16th century and became Dutch again in 1616. The city has many facade stones, the most famous represent the 4 professions, a ship, Tobias and the whale, all dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
