With its charming fishing port and abundant vegetation, the old town of Vlaardingen is one of the most picturesque in the region. The town has almost 75,000 inhabitants. A church is said to have been built as early as 700 and the town was granted its rights in 1273. Historically, Vlaardingen owes its reputation to fish, especially herring, but also anchovies and cod. However, fishing in Vlaardingen belongs to the past and this past is well and truly visible, around the Oude Haven (the old port) and the Koninging Wilhelminahaven. On the Grote Visserijplein, a moving monument honors the many fishermen who lost their lives at sea
