Saldanha Bay was explored by Etienne de Flacourt in 1648 and again in 1655. He made a precise inventory of the resources and the possibilities of approach. In December 1666, the Marquis de Mondevergue anchored in Saldanha and planted a pole in the ground, officially taking possession of the bay on behalf of King Louis XIV. For several years, the French crews used the fantastic marine resources of this coast, especially the seal skins. Disfigured by factories and hydrocarbon tanks, Saldanha is today the most hideous city in the country. It is thus advisable to go directly to Langebaan.
