Founded in 1814, the town was named after John Cradock, Governor of the Cape. With the Olive Schreiner Museum, the nearby Mountain Zebra National Park and the Die Tuishuise Hotel, that's at least three good reasons to visit this little Karoo gem. Some may remember the township uprising of the 1980s: Cradock was the starting point of a revolt initiated here in the poor district of Lingelihle by Matthew Goniwe, an anti-apartheid hero who was liquidated by the security forces in 1985 during the famous "Cradock Four" ambush. In summer, the temperature often exceeds 40°C, while it is freezing in winter.
