In 1890, it was only a material depot for the construction of the Lourenço Marques-Pretoria railway, near the Nkhomati, the "river of cows". Today, the city sleeps, sweltering in the heat, with one eye on Johannesburg, 500 km to the west, and the other on Maputo, about 100 km to the east. The city is practically on the border. The local chronicle cultivates the memory of a colourful character, a cop and a thug. During the Anglo-Boer war, at the turn of the century, "Colonel" Ludwig had put his band of thugs at the service of the British. The Crocodile Bridge entrance to the Kruger Park is 10 km north of the town.
