El Hamma is located about thirty kilometers from Gabes, entering the land. It is a crossroads which allows to reach the desert areas in the west, towards Kebili and Douz. The oasis of El Hamma was already famous in Roman times (under the name of Aquae Tacapitanae) for its thermal virtues. The water, sulfurous and very hot, feeds two hammams (one for men, one for women) in which we can still see the stone benches dating from antiquity. The main avenue is now very lively and well lit at night. Watermelon sellers offer there what is a good way to avoid dehydration in season.
