Ez Zahra is located about 15 kilometers southeast of the capital. It is reached by a hill located at the beginning of a sandy tongue which separates the lake of Tunis from the sea. One can still see the traces of a fort there. During the Husseinite reign, this coast was a residential suburb. With its immense beach, this seaside resort, founded in 1909 under the name of Saint-Germain, was the favorite place of the French colony of the time. The colonial Saint-Germain was appreciated by the painters Paul Klee and August Macke, who created works there in the early 20th century. The municipality of Ez Zahra has 35,000 inhabitants.
