Located in contact with the Carpatiques Mountains and the Grande Plaine, Miskolc, with 160 000 inhabitants, is the third town of Hungary. In the th century, this old market town grew rapidly through early industrialization, aided by the abundance of local raw materials. After the Second World War, favoured by investment, Miskolc asserted itself as the bastion of the Hungarian steel industry. Metallurgy, the paper industry and construction materials are also important. Miskolc presents all aspects of industrial cities today in decline, whose growth was spontaneous but too rapid: anarchique urban structure, outdated equipment, difficult living conditions. However, the city is modernizing and gradually recovering from the structural funds of the European Union. The heart of the city includes some remarkable baroque monuments that deserve to be visited as well as beautiful churches.
