This historic city is situated halfway between Vienna and Budapest (on the M 1 motorway), at the confluence of the Rába, the Rábca and the Danube, which has earned it the nickname of «city of the three rivers». The Danube is marking the border with Slovakia here. Sixth town of Hungary with its 130 000 inhabitants, Can (pronounced D-i-eur in Hungarian) is the largest agglomeration of the rich plain of Kisalföd.Royal city at the time of the Habsburg. From time of the Celts, the city was called Arrabona. Roman remains, huns and avars found in the city testify to the subsequent presence of these populations. If, already in the Middle Ages, Can was a major commercial city, it was time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that the city had its real hour of glory thanks to its position as a crossroads between the two cities of empire. In 1743 Can was declared royal city by Marie-Thérèse. The medieval area around the castle was set in beautiful baroque style. The communist years saw Can - and especially its suburbs - turning into a major metallurgical and industrial centre, manufacturing textiles and truck engines, an industry that still dominates today.
