About 45 km from Veszprèm, by Route 8, then 83 (road leading to Can, 50 km north of Pápa). This small town at the foot of the Bakony Mountains was an intellectual and commercial centre, the «Athens de la Pannonia». The town has remained one of the Hungarian Protestant centres; there has been a Calvinist secondary school since 1531. Two major figures of Hungarian literature were educated in Pápa: Sándor Petőfi and Mór Jókai. The city was completely renovated in the th century and has thermal baths.
