Stradbroke North, known as "Straddie", is the second largest sand island in the world. The western side is bathed by the calm waters of Moreton Bay, while the coast is directly exposed to the rollers of the ocean. Main Beach is an excellent surfing spot. There's great diving along the coast and 4x4 excursions to the freshwater lakes inland. The island is still kept very secret by the locals, but you can watch dolphins all year round and whales in season. Sealink operates a ferry service between Cleveland (a 30-minute drive from Brisbane) and Straddie between 6am and 6pm.
