Located 275 km west of Cairns on the Savannah Way, Undara is an amazing network of giant underground tunnels formed 190,000 years ago by lava flows. These labyrinthine corridors protect one of the longest lava cave systems in the world: Undara means "long way" in the Aboriginal language. The longest corridor winds for 160 km. The open areas are oases of tropical vegetation. Those who have time can follow the historic railroad to the old mining town of Chillagoe (150 km, by 4WD only) and discover the limestone caves of Chillagoe Montana National Park
